Fortune Mag lists 101 Dumbest Moments in Business 2007

Posted by wholeenchilada on December 19, 2007

Fortune Mag has a a list of 101 Dumbest Moments in Business. Here are a few that caught my eye:

High-tech toilets digital toilet
Japanese manufacturer Toto apologizes to customers and offers free repairs for 180,000 high-tech toilets – thrones that feature heated seats, air purifiers, blow dryers, and water sprayers – after at least three catch fire. “Fortunately nobody was using the toilets when the fire broke out,” says a company spokesman. “The fire would have been just under your buttocks.”

Disneyland — it’s a fat, fat world
Disneyland announces plans to close the “It’s a Small World” attraction to deepen its water channel after the ride’s boats start getting stuck under loads of heavy passengers. Employees ask larger passengers to disembark – and compensate them with coupons for free food.

VA

The Virginia Tourism Corp.
The Virginia Tourism Corp. scraps an ad campaign featuring people making heart symbols with their hands after it’s noted that the gesture is also the gang sign of Chicago’s Gangster Disciples.

Co-op Funeralcare
Co-op Funeralcare, a funeral home in Dunfermline, Scotland, says it is investigating reports that employees routinely used the cremains of the departed to keep passersby from slipping on icy sidewalks. “There’s every chance people living nearby will have walked through the remains,” an ex-employee says. “Some of them probably even inhaled them.”

Video: Unique Ballet Dancing – hand in hand

Posted by wholeenchilada on December 4, 2007

My folks passed this one along. It’s a beautiful video of a man missing a leg and a woman missing an arm doing simply amazing ballet. Even if you’re not a fan of the genre, you’ll appreciate the talent of the dancers and the creative choreography.

 Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP86v-ohKiI

The clip comes from “Programme “Centre Stage”, Europe – Satelite Hot Bird, TV CCTV9″ and is titled “Hand in Hand”. The ballet is performed by Ma Li (馬麗) and Zhai Xiaowei (翟孝偉), with choreography by Zaho Limin.

Origin of the phrase “The Whole Enchilada”

Posted by wholeenchilada on November 27, 2007

I didn’t realize how popular this query was until I picked the phrase for my new blog WholeEnchilada.wordpress.com. Wow – a lot of people really want to know the origin of the phrase “The Whole Enchilada”! So I did a bit ‘o research and found some info at Phrases.org. Admittedly, not the best source of information and probably not fully vetted, but I think the first answer to the question makes it worthy:

The Whole Enchilada

: : : : : What is the origin of this phrase, please?

: : : : : It comes from the Mexican dish ‘enchilada’ and means ‘all of it’.

: : : : : I don’t think so. I would agree that it is obvious that the saying came from the Mexican dish. However, I thought that the poster was questioning why the phrase uses that particular dish as opposed to others. Anyone?

: : : : :Someone in the Nixon administration used this phrase on one of the notorious tapes, and it became popular. I forget who exactly.

: : : : : It was Herb Kalmbach, talking on the phone to Nixon’s assistant John Erlichmann.

Hahahaha!!! “It comes from the Mexican dish ‘enchilada’ and means ‘all of it’.” Sarcasm at it’s best? Idiocracy in real life? You decide! Other than that, it seems plausible that this could be the origin of the phrase. So for now I’m going to say the phrase came from Herb Kalmbach on the Nixon tapes. If I come across better info, I’ll do another post.

You can read more about how “the whole enchilada” and similar phrases at World Wide Words:

What we do know is that the whole ball of wax is everything and so essentially means the same as other American expressions such as the whole nine yards, the whole shooting match, the whole megillah, the whole shebang and the whole enchilada. Until recently, its first appearance was in the ninth edition of Webster’s New Collegiate Dictionary of 1953 and was assumed to be of that period. It turns out to be much older.

She put the lime in the coconut, and drank them both up

Posted by wholeenchilada on November 27, 2007

Here’s a really cute picture of a tequila lime kitty that goes nicely with the well-known Harry Nilsson song:

Kitty LimeCoconut lyrics from the album Nilsson Schmilsson
by Harry Nilsson

Brother bought a coconut, he bought it for a dime
His sister had another one, she paid it for the lime

She put the lime in the coconut, she drank ’em both up (3x)
Put the lime in the coconut, she called the doctor, woke him up, and said

Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache

Now let me get this straight
Put the lime in the coconut, you drank ’em both up (3x)
Put the lime in the coconut, you called your doctor, woke him up, and said

Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache, I said
Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take, I said
Doctor, to relieve this bellyache

You put the lime in the coconut, you drink ’em both together
Put the lime in the coconut, then you feel better
Put the lime in the coconut, drink ’em both up
Put the lime in the coconut, and call me in the morning

And for all you nutty Muppet fans, here’s a great clip of the group performing the song

Amusements: Creative Turkey Recipe

Posted by wholeenchilada on November 15, 2007

Here’s a creative, amusing new turkey receipe that will make your dinner the talk of the town! Instead of arguing with relatives and fighting over the drumstick, wishbone or the lastest family drama, you could be laughing together (until it’s no longer funny, then you may return to your normal holiday grief)!

NEW TURKEY RECIPE

1. Cut out aluminum foil in desired shapes.

2. Arrange the turkey in the roasting pan, position the foil carefully.

3. Roast according to your own recipe and serve.

4. Watch your guests’ faces…

Turkey Tan

Come on, you have to admit you chuckled – at least a little?

Amusements: Pretty Darn Funny Walmart Application

Posted by wholeenchilada on November 14, 2007

There’s some excellent humor in a post outlining an actual (supposedly?) Walmart application turned in by a senior citizen: Now This Really Happened!

Here are a few of my favorite lines:

  • DESIRED POSITION:  Company’s President or Vice President.  But seriously, whatever’s available.   If I was in a position to be picky, I wouldn’t be applying here in the first place
  • LAST POSITION HELD:  Target for middle management hostility.
  • MAY WE CONTACT YOUR CURR EMPLOYER?:   If I had one, would I be here?
  • WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE DOING IN FIVE YEARS?: Living in the Bahamas with a fabulously wealthy dumb sexy blonde supermodel who thinks I’m the greatest thing since sliced bread.  Actually, I’d like to be doing that now.

Read more here: http://isthisworthit.wordpress.com/2007/11/14/now-this-really-happened/

Now I have no way of verifying if this was a real application or if the man was actually hired “because he was so funny” but wouldn’t you want to work for a manager who saw and got the humor instead of being labeled an unemployeed, aged nut-job? Of course the manager in me is screaming – oh no you didn’t, but this is my fun blog so I can laugh and applaud the bold move!
